About Our Church
First Congregational, UCC Longmont
Church History
UCC Longmont is more formally known by it's full name, First Congregational, United Church of Christ, Longmont.

We began in 1872 as First Congregational Church, Longmont. The years in between then and now have seen many changes, but we remain rooted in the desire to share the love of God in a community of faith and by working for social justice. (What we call the kingdom, or kin-dom, of God.)

1n 1952, the United Church of Christ was born when several denominations came together under once governance structure in order to expand their witness to the world. From there on, First Congregational became First Congregational, UCC, Longmont.

In later years, we became known informally as UCC Longmont, which is still how you'll hear us refer to ourselves most often.

Worship at UCC Longmont

Come as you are--When we say "all are welcome here," we mean it. You don't have to get dressed up to join us, although you can if you like. Among our regular attendees, you'll find people dressed in everything from Colorado Sunday best to shorts and a t-shirt. That means "come as you are" spiritually, too. Doubts, questions, nerves or curiosities are all welcome, and you'll find a calm, gentle and often playful spirit among the church community.

Contemplative--We have moments for silent prayer and meditation throughout our worship. These times of silence invite us into deeper into relationship with God.

Experiential--Many Sundays, you'll find that worship has a "hands-on" element, whether it's a prayer station, a journaling prompt, or a reflection question.

Intergenerational--We believe that people of all ages thrive when they learn from each other.
You'll find kids and adults taking leadership roles in worship, like leading a prayer, reading the scripture, or leading music. In addition, kids "bring in the light" together each Sunday morning, placing candles on the communion table during our first hymn.
On the first Sunday of each month, holidays, and throughout the summer, people of all ages worship together in the sanctuary. When Children's Church is offered for our elementary school students, kids are welcome to remain in the sanctuary for worship.

Liturgical--We follow the rhythms of the church year. This includes seasons like Advent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, Lent, the season leading up to Easter, and observances like All Saints Day, Ash Wednesday and Pentecost. Our typical Sunday worship has many practices passed down from our ancestors in faith, and we blend traditional hymns and prayers with newer ways of expressing the faith.

Spiritual
Community
We build community through serving together, playing together and worshipping together. Whether you're a long time member or first time visitor, you're welcome to join a service event, stick around for fellowship time after worship on the second Sunday of each month, or join a class. You can also take a peek at some of our Ministry Teams here.

Life Together
Biblical relationships are often marked by covenants, or promises, that we make to one another and with God. Similarly, we've adopted several covenants to guide our church relationships.

The foundation document of our life together is our Community Covenant, adopted by the congregation in 2021.
We also have two important safety policies: our Child Protection Policy and our Sexual Abuse and Harassment Policy.

Governance
The governing body of our congregation is our Church Council. Church Council members are elected by the congregation each year. They function much as a Board of Directors does, and are responsible for thoughtfully discerning the way forward throughout the year, in keeping with our church bylaws and governance documents.
